Arancha González Laya

María Aránzazu (Arancha) González Laya is a lawyer who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation in the Spanish government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez from 2020 to 2021.

From 2013 to 2019, Professor González was assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the International Trade Center (ITC). From 2005 to 2013, she was Chief of Staff to World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General Pascal Lamy, where she took an active part in launching the WTO's Aid for Trade initiative and served as the Director-General representative to the G20.

Prior to her work at the WTO, Professor González held several positions at the European Commission, where she negotiated trade agreements and assisted developing countries in their trade development efforts. Between 2002 and 2004, she was the European Union Spokesperson on Trade and Advisor to the European Union Trade Commissioner.

Professor González has a vast knowledge of international trade and economics, as well as experience in trade and development issues in the public and private sectors and in the management of multilateral organisations. She has lectured widely on trade and development, including at the College of Europe (Bruges), IELPO (Barcelona), the World Trade Institute (WTI) and the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade.

Carl-Henric Svanberg
Chairman, Volvo

Carl-Henric Svanberg is the chairman of AB Volvo, a leading global manufacturer of trucks and construction equipment – a role he has held since 2012. He is the immediate past Chair of ERT (2018-2022) and also the chairman of The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, the world’s oldest academy of engineering sciences.

Between 2010 and 2018, Carl-Henric Svanberg was the chairman of BP plc and led the board through the Deep Water Horizon incident, its aftermath and the company’s recovery.From 2003 to 2009, Carl-Henric Svanberg was the CEO of Ericsson. He joined in the middle of the telecom crisis when the company was forced to reduce its workforce from 107,000 to 47,000 employees, led the restructuring and a strong expansion of sales during seven years when 3G and early versions of 4G were rolled out. 

Prior to this, Carl-Henric Svanberg was the CEO of Assa Abloy Group, a manufacturer of locks and door hardware. He expanded the company from a small domestic player to a global leader through a successful global acquisition strategy.

Cecilia Malmström
Nonresident Senior Fellow, PIIE

Malmström has devoted the better part of her career to global affairs and international relations and has extensive experience with multilateral leadership and cooperation. She served as European commissioner for trade from 2014 to 2019 and as European commissioner for home affairs from 2010 to 2014. She was first elected as a member of the European Parliament in 1999, serving until 2006, and was minister for EU affairs in the Swedish government from 2006 to 2010.

As European commissioner for trade, Malmström represented the European Union in the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other international trade bodies. She was responsible for negotiating bilateral trade agreements with key countries, including agreements with Canada, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, Vietnam, and the four founding Mercosur countries.
